Warner Bros. has picked up the rights to Archaia Entertainment's comicbook mini-series "Lucid" for writer-producer Akiva Goldsman to develop and produce as a potential new film franchise. Zachary Quinto's production banner Before the Door, which created the book, also is on board to adapt the property for the bigscreen. With "Harry Potter" having ended its run at the studio, WB is on the hunt for new projects to take its place. When it was first introduced at San Diego Comic-Con, in 2009, "Lucid" was described as a tale of what would happen to Harry Potter if he grew up and joined the CIA. Penned by "True Blood" thesp Michael McMillian and illustrated by Anna Wieszczyk, the four-book series takes place in a parallel universe where magic is real and world leaders have secret agents working to fight off supernatural threats. Main character is a young agent, recently appointed "Protector of the Realm," who must use his skills as a covert spy and combat mage to stop an occult technology dealer. No screenwriter has yet been hired to adapt the fantasy actioner. Archaia's editor-in-chief Stephen Christy would also serve as a producer on the pic. "Lucid" was the first comicbook to come out of Quinto's Before the Door banner with Archaia before following that up with "Mr. Murder is Dead," written by Victor Quinaz, with art by Brent Schoonover. The "Lucid" deal is the second for Archaia with Warner Bros. and Goldsman after recently setting up reclusive dinosaur-tale "Bolivar," based on the upcoming book from Sean Rubin, as an animated feature that Kerry Foster's Weed Road is also on board to produce and Kealan O'Rourke will write and direct. Lysistrata Johnson collected buzz downtown, however the undertake Aristophanes strugged to dive right in to Broadway. Cheerleader tuner "Lysistrata Johnson," that has battled to create a foothold by itself because it started Broadway previews in November, will shake its last pompom and shutter Sunday. 'Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace': The Reviews Were In!

To contact us Click HERE
"Star Wars: Episode I" returns to theaters today, in 3D. But lets flash back for a few moments to May 19th, 1999 the day The Phantom Menace was originally released. If you were a die-hard Star Wars fan, like I was, you were going to see this movie regardless of what the critics wrote about it. You ached to hear, once again, that familiar yet exciting 20th Century Fox fanfare before reading the opening crawl. You may have camped out on a dirty sidewalk for hours, days, weeks even, just so you could be one of the first to experience it. But if you werent one of those fans, you might have waited and checked out the reviews before making the decision to see The Phantom Menace. The following is a sampling of what youd have read. The Story The plot has something to do with a trade embargo being waged against a small planet called Naboo, an embargo that turns out to be a disguise for a planned full-scale invasion. Were never told what this tiny planet could possibly be worth to the enormous Trade Federation (the way we understand, in the first Star Wars, what the baddies stand to gain from the elimination of the rebel forces), so the storys basic conflict has no weight. Charles Taylor, Salon.com The Look There are new places here--new kinds of places. Consider the underwater cities, floating in their transparent membranes. The Senate chamber, a vast sphere with senators arrayed along the inside walls, and speakers floating on pods in the center. And other places: the cityscape with the waterfall that has a dizzying descent through space. And the other cities: one city Venetian, with canals, another looking like a hothouse version of imperial Rome, and a third that seems to have grown out of desert sands. Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times The Gungan Yoda puts in a cameo, but the film's designated alien is Jar Jar Binks, a rabbit-eared ambulatory lizard whose pidgin English degenerates from pseudo-Caribbean patois to Teletubby gurgle. (Although Jar Jar can be construed as grotesquely Third World and the fish faces talk like Fu Manchu, the most blatant ethnic stereotype is the hook-nosed merchant insect who owns young Anakin.) Jar Jar and his fellow Gungans suck the oxygen out of every scene; their human costars seem understandably asphyxiated. J. Hoberman, The Village Voice The Kid Based on what we see here, it doesn't seem like such an ineffable mystery that this kid will end up a wheezing, intergalactic power-mongering control freak. A slave boy who already fashions himself a Jedi knight, Anakin is a precocious brat -- the kind of kid who, in our own galaxy, might commandeer a playground and run everybody else off the jungle gym. If the psychological richness of the Star Wars movies is grounded in Darth Vader's movement in and out of the light, then it may be high time to create a new myth -- i.e., a new franchise. Peter Rainer, NY Magazine The Final Word Nothing could live up to the hype of this film. Nothing. "Star Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Menace" is a movie. It's not the Second Coming. It's not even the First Coming, depending on your religious stance. It's just a movie. ... And while I'm saddened to report that it's a deeply flawed film in terms of both story line and character development, I'm happy to note that visually it's a marvel. Paul Clinton, CNN.com "Phantom Menace" discussed this week in Talk Nerdy!

Supernatural Episode Recap: "Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie"

To contact us Click HERE
Unicorns, laser-eyed robots, killer sharks and cranky clowns all have an affect on this latest installment of Supernatural. Regrettably, Mike is around the business finish of the brutal beating through the things he fears most. Meanwhile, Dean finds something he loves: a huge Slinky. During the last seven seasons of Supernatural, we have many userful stuff here about Mike and Dean. We have learned their likes as well as their dislikes. We have learned their most favorite lingo and the things they prefer to eat and put on. But as this is a horror show, we have also learned what they are scared of. For example, we all know Dean hates to fly. Season 1's "Phantom Traveler" had him face that fear to amusing results. In Season 2's "Everyone Loves a Clown, we discovered something about Sammy: He's an excellent large anxiety about individuals circus freaks known as clowns. This latest episode had the youngest Winchester fighting that fear once again. By fighting, I am talking about getting his cute self beaten, battered and bruised. Poor Sammy. I do not mind saying I had been fearing "Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie" (also known as "PPMM") for a few reasons. 1. Typing that lengthy ass title takes forever. Therefore it is only going to take place once. 2. Similar to Sammy, I personally don't like clowns. However, Used to do pull through "Everyone Loves a Clown" in older days, and so i had high hopes. Obviously the episode did not waste whenever dealing with individuals circus monstrosities. Sam's running from these questions scene that's similar to Dean's own running escapade that went lower in Season 4's "Yellow Fever." But Sammy has something real to become scared of while Dean only thought he did. His tormentor would be a cute little doggy. Not the 2nd introduction of Pennywise, the frightening clown from Stephen King's book and subsequent small-series known as "It." Things I loved about "PPMM": -I love the very fact the recap demonstrated Sam's coulrophobia (anxiety about clowns) from Season 2. It appears such a long time ago, right? -The Supernatural title page was customized to suit the theme during the day. Unpredicted and incredibly awesome. -That Plucky/Chuck E. Cheese-type place looked properly annoying for just about any adult to go in. -The Jack Bauer/24-ant countdown clock with associated seem effect would be a nice touch. -Dean getting a cryptic conversation with Frank with an actual pay phone: "I'm the Egg Guy." Loved Sam's response to hearing it too. -Dean pointed out being from the hot chicks game for some time. A great move thinking about what went down to him within the last episode together with his one-evening stand and also the "daughter" who attempted to kill him. That's enough to obtain anybody to place a halt on all hookups immediately. Even Dean Winchester. Question how lengthy his moratorium can last? -We discover the genesis for Sam's fear. It appears when Large Dad Winchester was most likely away, Dean accustomed to ditch Mike at Plucky's so he may go get women. I do not blame Mike for developing this fear. What else was designed to happen? -I really like Mike saying the mantra Dean told him: "Whether it will bleed, you are able to kill it." -Loved all of the different names for that bad dreams that found existence: "Vamptopus" "Octopus" "Dractopus" "Land Shark" "Seabiscuit the Impaler" -Could it be me or did the vibe between your siblings appear a little more enjoyable? Mike was smiling more at Dean's jokes. More than ever before before. Even the poor quality ones. I loved that. -The dying by unicorn scene was great. Guy thought he was obvious from the danger. Then your horn comes piercing with the man's chest. Awesome. Loved once the unicorn was running and rainbows were being released of their ass. too -I love that Mike could acquire some punches in. Individuals clowns deserved it. -Obviously Dean really wants to purchase a giant Slinky. Obviously he is doing. -Love Mike looking to get tough using the Plucky employees. Love Dean attempting to help that kid after which the inability to consume the Plucky pizza since it tastes like "butt." -I never expected a Breaking Bad reference about this show. How awesome is the fact that? -Once the kid pointed out the robot had "laser eyes," all I possibly could think about was Ronald from Season 2's "Nightshifter" cheap he initially thought the frightening shape-shifter would be a Mandroid. -Kooky Plucky worker Howard was the reason. He'd each one of these bad dreams arrived at existence and off parents while he was clearly messed up -- he blamed his parents for his brother's dying. However the trigger seemed to be the truth that he did not obtain the manager's job. Would you imagine him as manager? I believe not. This episode was a disagreement against art therapy for children. -High cliff was the Plucky worker within the lion suit. I question when they named the smoothness following the show's bodyguard Clif Kosterman. -Following the 24 clock expires, here's the way they tell us we are in our: having a lower third in large type that states: RIGHT FRIGGIN' NOW. Obviously the neighborhood CW funnel covered a variety of it track of bugs and things like that. Boo. -Mike got glitter'd in addition to bruised up. But he faced his fear. Great for Mike. -Loved loved loved that last scene between Mike and Dean. Dean was full-on laughing. I recall him doing by using Castiel within an episode. However I do not ever remember this type of full laugh as he was with Mike. Maybe "Hell House" from Season 1? It had been nice. It had been also nice that Mike got Dean the large Slinky he wanted a lot. Obviously, Dean takes things a tad too far and will get Mike a stuffed clown. Not awesome, Dean. -I really like anytime the boys can discuss a few of their encounters once they were becoming an adult -- bad or good. And that we got a bit of of this within this episode. Dean even pointed out how father accustomed to haul him around as he would be a kid. "PPMM" would be a fun episode. We wanted something similar to this. The Winchester siblings haven't had much when it comes to fun inside a very long time. It has been lots of depression and loss and grief this year. And That I have that Sammy most likely does not think being pummelled by clowns is his type of fun but when it resulted for the reason that final scene, I am okay by using it. And in the looks from the sneak look for the following Supernatural, all of the fun is finished. And drama and Sam's hellucinations have returned. Plus, Dean appears like he's in quite the frightening predicament. Take it on. However, I might have to watch "PPMM" a few more occasions. Random Ideas -Did Dean really say "no booze?" Could he stop like this? I am talking about, I recieve it. He'd been imbibing as he had the main one-evening stand. But nonetheless. Let's wait and watch how lengthy his "no consuming" act lasts. -Are generally Mike and Dean turning out to be Danny Glover also known as Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon franchise? In "The Slice Women" Dean states he's "too old with this.Inch Now it's Sam's submit this episode. -Oh and apparently Fred Savage in the Question Years is really a Leviathan now. Love that. Some Favorite Lines (thanks to authors Andrew Dabb/Daniel Loflin) -"I'm the Egg Guy. Seriously, Frank. Pay phones? I am talking about, seriously. I am obtaining the clap off this factor just touching it." -"What exactly shall we be searching for? An octovamp? A vamptopus?" "That's crazy for us, right?" "It will push the envelope." -"Cops possess a theory?" "Yeah, they believe the ball washer made it happen.Inch "The what?" "The...ball washer." "The what?" "The ball..." -"Close, but no Seabiscuit." -"This is a shark bite." "Yeah." "And knowing through the radius, I'd say a 20-footer a minimum of. (Mike provides a look) Shark Week, guy. How can you not watch that? Entire week of sharks." "You frightened of robots?" "They've laser eyes!" -"Yeah, we do not care that you simply uh, you realize, broke bad or whatever." -"What exactly do you consider?Inch "I believe the bitchy mother plus uh, sad kid, plus uh place pad with something nuts written onto it equals crazy corpse." show less

[Warning: This story consists of spoilers from Monday's "Callbacks" episode of Smash.] Pitting the lady nearby facing the Broadway veteran, NBC's "Smash" crowned its Lana Turner throughout Monday's "Callbacks" episode, with Megan Hilty's Ivy obtaining the pivotal role within the play at the middle of the musical drama.Within the hour, Ivy was presented with similar conditions the morally upstanding Karen (Katharine McPhee) faced within the premiere when, throughout a training session, Derek (Jack Davenport) designed a move ahead the longtime ensemble player. After battling in excess of ten years, Ivy elected to not shun his advances and rather put her career first and rested with him.Just how close was Karen to landing the part? Very close, it works out. Within an early draft from the 70-page "Smash" pilot -- which creator Theresa Rebeck cut 20 pages from because it developed once the project moved from Showtime to NBC -- the newcomer ends up landing the coveted role."Around the pilot, we really had Team Ivy and Team Karen people around the set saying, 'I think Ivy should have it,A and 'I think Karen should have it,AInch Rebeck informs "The Hollywood Reporter." "And So I visited [executive producers] Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman and that i stated, 'Let's be sensible.A I had been writing Episode 2 and requested, 'Would you actually take this seriously? For that first workshop of the completely new musical, can you create it for her?'"Shaiman and Wittman both stated exactly the same factor: that Karen was pretty eco-friendly if this found Broadway experience. Ironically, the duo were studying the identical factor if this found casting the Broadway manufacture of "Catch Me If You're Able ToInch lead with Aaron Tveit, who, Rebeck recalls, they stated was too eco-friendly at that time to star within the production."That's really -- literally -- what you will use somebody who has no training but is really a obvious tremendous talent," Rebeck states. "You insert them in the ensemble and season them. So this is where we are going."And that is what went down with Tveit, who ultimately arrived charge in "Catch Me."Although it seems that McPhee's Karen is ensemble-bound, that does not imply that "Smash's" Marilyn will stay the same throughout the show's 15-episode run, thinking about Ivy's early bad behavior with Derek and also the high-profile role."I have done many of these training courses and reading through and there is no such factor as job stability," Broadway veteran Hilty ("Wicked") states. "You may be changed inside a heartbeat also it sets the stakes through the roof and makes people behave with techniques they would not normally behave."As the workshop role is Ivy's, it's anyone's guess whether it is a part she will hold onto, particularly with Karen likely landing within the ensemble. The 2-way race could likely expand to incorporate another when Uma Thurman involves play a famous and hard superstar teasing with the thought of starring within the production."The casting of Marilyn [revealed in Episode 2] might not be who it's in the finish of year,Inch NBC Entertainment leader Robert Greenblatt told reporters at January's Television Experts Association's winter press tour.Exactly what do you think about Ivy as Marilyn? Who'd you at long last want to see star in "Marilyn"? Smash airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on NBC. The Hollywood Reporter

CCVIII: "InuYasha"

To contact us Click HERE
What in the hell took me so long to speak about this one? It's been a long time since I mentioned any of Rumiko Takahashi's works, after reviewing both Ranma 1/2 (Review #58) and Those Obnoxious Aliens/Urusei Yatsura (Review #115). InuYasha is one of Takahashi's later works, which lasted a little over a decade.

The story takes place in two eras, but the series mainly has its plot set in one. Kagome Higurashi is a middle schooler who resides in the hereditary Shinto shrine of the family. One day, she is pulled into the Bone Eater's Well by a centipede demon and ends up in Feudal Japan, more specifically their Sengoku period. Fifty years prior to this, a dog demon was sealed by the priestess Kikyo, his body pinned to a try and weakened by her sacred arrow. In present day, call it irony or fate, but Kagome, who is Kikyo's incarnation, would be the one to remove this seal, in a desperation move to save herself from the centipede demon, who targets her for the Shikon no Tama, a powerful jewel that was embodied in her. Making short work of the demon, he would have had the jewel as well... had it not been shattered into various pieces, the shards scattering throughout the ends of the continent. With this, the unlikely alliance of Kagome and InuYasha is formed, their task: to get the shards of the Sacred Jewel. But it won't be a simple task, as others also have their sights on them, and one shard can amplify a demon's power greatly. That said, they have to make sure neither one of them dies in the process... lest they kill each first.

As opposed to a comical angle (though it has it's moments), the story takes a more darker route, much like with her other work Mermaid Saga. It still retains the romance aspect from the majority of her works. In total, it bears 193 episodes. Majority of this belonged to the original TV anime, while the latter 26 was made as InuYasha: The Final Act. In addition, there were also four movies as well as a few video games derived from this, which was made from a 56 volume manga series. In the US, both TV anime and the 4 movies were licensed and distributed under Viz Media, who also did such for the manga. In fact, namely all her manga works saw English distribution under Viz, while the same could be said for the licensing for most of the anime made from them, the exceptions being Urusei Yatsura, Rin-ne, and Rumic Theatre. The TV anime was made in the Sunrise studio. The first TV anime aired on both Adult Swim (a late night Cartoon Network block), and Animax Asia. Also licensed here, The Final Act was televised only on Animax Asia, unlike the former. Richard Ian Cox voiced InuYasha for the entirety of the dub, who I earlier mentioned also took up the voice of Ranma Saotome (male) in Ranma 1/2. A little side note, but some of the voices heard from that anime you'll be hearing again in this one. Some people tend to make comparisons as to who in this anime resembles what from the other anime. Getting back on topic, Kagome was voiced by Moneca Stori (who did other voices like Ranma 1/2's Princess Ori, Gundam Wing's Sally Po, and Hamtaro's Laura Haruna.) In The Final Act, she is voiced by Kira Tozer.

InuYahsa has received its love and its share of hate. I still favor Ranma 1/2 over this, but I didn't mind the darker Mermaid Saga, and this one is also okay in my book, so InuYasha gets an 7 of 10 in general. At some point, I might do a 4-in-1 movie review of this title, so be on the look out for that.

CCIX: "Highschool DxD"

To contact us Click HERE
Another anime dealing with unusual high school plots. Highschool DxD differs from titles I've seen before, and using high school as a setting... I couldn't help but be curious. But like YuYu Hakusho, it follows that "DEAD KINDA EARLY!?" scenario.

Suppose you are a second year student of Kuoh Academy, who has a overwhelming sexual appetite. With me so far? Now then, imagine that you live your life as normal until you meet a certain girl, Yuma Amano. You two start dating, and when alone, she reveals herself as a Fallen Angel and kills you. To add to things, you wake up with only you recollecting what happened, with abilities you aren't used to, somehow being nearly slain again. Lastly, you wake up somehow to find a naked Devil in your room, Rias Germony to be exact. As well as her identity, you find out that you, yourself, have been reincarnated as a Devil, obligated to work under her Devil family, with the "dreams" of being attacked twice not being dreams at all! For the lascivious Issei Hyodo, that's just the start of his problems, as he now works as the pawn of her family; his left arm sports a gauntlet known as a Sacred Gear, save that his powers as the newest Devil is pretty weak. Is it a dream come true? Has he found his ideal harem, save for the many threats to his life that occurs in the process?

This title is pretty recent, having began on January 6th and ending just last week. Despite lacking any English voices as of right now, Funimation has licensed this anime for the U.S. For now, it will be simulcast on their website. It's a guess, but if it does happen, Funico (Funi + Nico Nico) might see it as well. Still, while being simulcasted under them, Funimation will also see to its distribution on Blu-Ray and DVD. Most stations had their TV versions censored, with the exception of AT-X. Another romantic comedy and harem, it also has its mix of action, supernatural and fantasy, as well as its weirdness in some areas, but I won't spoil it for you by going into detail of that. The studio behind this is TNK (who was also involved with Karin and Cowboy Bebop: The Movie), and its episode length is only 12, so its pretty short. Aside from this there is also a special episode. While it does have it's doses of action and blood, it also has nudity even whilst censored, as well as its fanservice moments, so keeping it from those unsuited and young ones is a must! The seiyuus of Issei and Rias are (respectively) Yuki Kaji (who also did roles like Tai-Yan of Fist of the Blue Sky, the prequel to Fist of the North Star) and Yoko Hisaka (who voiced Mio Akiyama in K-On! prior to English dubbing.)

Highschool DxD is, yes, another harem anime, but in a way, I liked where it was going plotwise, so I'll have at it as an 8 of 10.

CCX: "Buso Renkin"

Arms Alchemy... that is the core device of this anime, as well that the literal translation for its title, Buso Renkin. Another one in which the hero suffers a literally life-changing scenario from the jump, from the surface, I thought it would be like a Bleach knockoff of sorts, but no, this theory is shot after looking at it thoroughly. Plus, unlike Bleach, I wouldn't consider this mainstream, per say, since it was not only made differently, but it isn't painfully long like the other one (sorry Kubo, I just call it as I see them.)

Kazuki Muto is as normal a teenager as they come, just a typical high school student. That normal life comes to an end after saving a mysterious girl. Against this unknown monster, he is killed in action, but somehow wakes up, as if it never happened. Yet, reality slaps him hard when another monster attack him and his sister, Mahiro. To further this, the girl he rescued, Tokiko Tsumura, told him about the monster, revealed to be a Homoculus. She also informed him in regards to him losing his life, as well as the mysterious stone, known as a Kakugane, serving as his heart (which essentially revived him.) Given the choices to flee or fight, he chooses the latter, arming himself with his Buso Renkin, taking the form of a lance. Aiding Tokiko, he intends to defeat every Homonculi and their master. Yet, there is something strange about his Buso Renkin. It may be the kind of stone that will threaten his life. So obviously, he has to fight for his own survival!

Buso Renkin is another Shonen Jump piece serialized in one of their manga anthologies, and like others such as Bleach, became animated, sometimes with the Shonen Jump trademark shown near the title in the English opening sequence. Having the length of 26 episodes, Xebec was the studio that animated this, and it was licensed for U.S. under Viz Media, who also published the manga. Action and Supernatural are the dominant genres in this piece, but it does have romance, in the sense that it's "love in the heat of battle" kind of thing. Kazuki is voiced by Steve Staley in the dub (who I mentioned before as the voice of Eiken's Densuke Mifune), with Tokiko done by Tara Platt (who also did voices such as Rukia's humanized Sode no Shirayuki of Bleach, as well as Temari of Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden.) Interesting to note that Platt is married to Yuri Lowenthal, who ironically also has a vocal role in here as Victor Powered, and has done other works alongside her; one of those roles, in the case of Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden, happens to be Sasuke Uchiha. The flamboyant and comical Koshaku Chono / Papillon is voiced by Spike Spencer (who also done roles like Galbee of Dirty Pair Flash: Mission Two, Majic Lin of Sorcerer Stabber Orphen, and Shinji Ikari of the Evangelion anime works, including the Rebuild movies.)

Buso Renkin is not memorable, per say, but it's well done, so a 7 of 10 should be fine. A decent piece overall, not great, but I'm surely not disappointed either.

ST3: Weeaboos, Dubs vs. Subs, and Cosplay Accuracy

To contact us Click HERE
This is going to be a longer post than normal, but on Facebook, 3 interesting topics came my way. And since it's rather relevant to what I talk about in Seiko's Otaku Pad, I figure I immerse myself into these 3 topics:
  • Cosplaying: Is it just for fun?
  • Dubs vs. Subs clashes
  • The term Weeaboo: Why need it, and why its offensive?
With this in mind, let's get started. I'm sure there will be a video posting of this in the near future, should it come to this.

Topic I
Cosplaying: Is It Just For Fun?

I'm not much of a cosplayer persay, granted I only have one so far (which is in my picture gallery on this blog), as well as another I'm working on. However, I love the activity of dressing up, and so do many others. Cosplay is the hybrid word meaning Costume Play, which oddly enough was coined in a U.S. sci-fi convention, Worldcon. The term was created by Nobuyuki Takahashi of Studio Hard in 1984, when he attended the Los Angeles convention. Over time, it became a term applied to the anime and Japanese culture scene, where those who do not only adapt the look of a character, but also their mannerisms and characteristics. It became such a craze, there has been gatherings and contests made from these. Even to some degree, certain companies that distribute anime, like FUNImation, sometimes "hire" cosplayers for gigs dealing with a certain anime. Of course, there are some that do it just for fun, not really caring for detail, while you have some that not only focus on every little thing, but sometimes belittle those whose cosplay they don't like. Of course it takes the fun out of it whenever they do, which leads to why I address this.

Accuracy matters sometimes, yes, but when that applies is usually in the case of contests, photoshoots, as well as movies, should that happen. However, if they're doing it just for fun, should all the technical discrepancies REALLY matter? I'm not sure whether they do this to make themselves look/feel superior or what, but what of those who are hurt by this? They do such because they love it, to take that away from them damages the type of people we are: those that love anime, and have a healthy obsession with that and the culture of Japan overall. Of course, there is another field this applies too (well, ALL of what I'll be talking about.) That said, I'll end this topic with this:

"Traits and certain characteristics may matter in cosplay, but if it's just for fun, then it's irrelevant. They are just dressing up as who they love, don't take that away from them!"

Okay, on to the next one...

Topic II
Dubs vs. Subs Clashes

It's an old story, but one that exists even to this day. On this blog, I mention often about the names of those who voice characters in anime, sometimes covering both the English and Japanese sides of the matter (Voice Actors/Seiyuus, to be exact.) Very rare do I weigh in on which I favor more, as I don't have a bias in the matter. I may dislike one, but that isn't to say I'm "pro-sub and anti-dub" or vice versa. Sometimes, I just feel that at times, English just don't do enough, and sometimes for Japan, it can be overdone. However, this isn't about my view on things like this, but the general clashes that occur whenever this topic is brought up. The only time I felt that the subbed version was superior was in the case of Bible Black and a few other hentai, since their English voicing tends to be rather lackluster. I think the same was said in regards to Eiken. But I'm not saying I'd watch all in one specific language. I view both because it may contain different dialogue at times, as was the case with Sonic X.

Regardless, there are those who, rather for the sake of arguing, or whatever, feel the need to start clashes over which of them may be superior: The English Dubbing, or the Original Subtitled. There was even some cases, as with Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon, over which English Dub was superior. Call it nitpicking, but seeing such arguments everywhere I go just to watch anime gets a little aggravating, and it's not just me that feel this way. There are different versions for a reason, yes, but that's not to say that reason is to pick pointless squabbles over which reigns over the other. To me, it's irrelevant because it's the same damn anime. On this blog, I'm sure I didn't mention this specifically, but such topics I will not have here. It's fine if you want to weigh your two cents on something, but that's not a green light to attack someone for not sharing your sentiments. And whether verbally or physically, that's what a lot are doing generally. That said, I'm going to lay down the law with this:

"Subtitled or spoken in full English, anime is anime. Language does not take away from what it is in the end. So... shut up and enjoy it!"

Almost done, and we're getting to the last, infuriating topic before I call this a complete post.

Topic III
The Term "Weeaboo": Why Need it? Why Is It Offensive?

A lot of people say this for shits and giggles sometimes, but it is to some degree hurtful. This word is coined a lot on sites like 4chan, and even found its way onto Urban Dictionary. There is no clear-cut definition, other than a slang term to describe someone who favors the Japanese culture over his/her own, even to the point of cursing not being born of Japanese ancestry. Funny thing is, prior to 4chan coining it, the word Weeaboo meant nothing, until it took the place of the similarly degrading term Wapanese, which was used to describe white people who favor the Japanese culture. In my opinion, the word itself wasn't hurtful, until it was used that way, I could be wrong, though. Stepping back for a bit, I'm going to get into the term Otaku. Granted, back in it's country of origin, it is a very hurtful term used to describe shut-ins obsessed with anime, and are portrayed in the worst of fashion as opposed to here in the US, where it's not really as frowned upon. Why this is so dates back to 1988, when in just a year, Tsutomu Miyazaki, aka the Otaku Murderer (no relation to Hayao or Goro Miyazaki) slain 4 little girls, molesting their corpses afterwards. Even after his arrest, the term Otaku had been brandished to the point it was loathed, assuming that all Otaku would end up being murderers/rapists. The 2004 incedent involving a former delivery man, Kaoru Kobayashi, didn't help matters. In this scenario, he  kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and murdered a 1st grade female student, suspected to be part of the Figure Moe Zoku, a group that loves and collect small figurines. In counts before this, he was listed as a sexual offender due to numerous other cases, sexually assaulting eight children in 1989, the same year The Otaku Murderer (T.O.M.) was cuffed. Granted, while he did do things akin to T.O.M., Kobayashi wasn't necessarily an otaku, but it did not stop the people for disliking those classified as such, and even had the law riled up about it. Because of this, any otaku was targeted as a possible sex offender, as well as the controlling of eroticism depictions, mainly found in what's known today as hentai movies, visual novels, and hentai manga/doujinshi, as they figure this would entice more crime by otaku. It was a pretty big deal, but to some degree, it was more than biased and blew out of proportion.

Otaku mainly classified those passionate about the Japanese culture, used in the same fashion as the words "Geek" or "Trekkie". But because of those men, as well as some others, even to this day, there is still negativity looming from those hearing the word. However, it's not that serious. Otakon, a convention for otaku, is one of the few GOOD things I hear in regards to the name. And even my anime club president and good friend, Christopher Wanamaker, proudly holds his title as America's Greatest Otaku, again, not to be classified in a demeaning way. Anyway, let me get back on topic here. Both terms had been deemed as unhealthy. While one is a shut-in, maybe, but I think they're just blowing smoke up someone's rear with that statement. And there is little, to no distinction between the two, save for those who actually speak the language in a mixture with their own. While I find it funny (no offense to those that do), it supposedly offends the others, and this I can see with actual Japanese-descent people, but for Americans to be offended, there is just no excuse. Attacking someone, verbally or physically, just because they think whatever comes from Japan is great is just being cruel. Some things actually are great to a person, what's wrong with that? Hell, I'd proudly say I'd rather listen to a Jpop song than any Pop music popular over here that's made here. The same could be said for one's taste in food, clothing, mannerisms, and to some degree, speech and tastes in women/men (yes, to some people they are attractive. Heck, I think so.)

While you can't change your race, people admire that of others, while they loathe their own (sometimes for the right reasons, IMO). The way I see it, they are a weeaboo (generally) if:
  • They either speak fluent Japanese or mix English with Japanese words, despite not being of that origin.
  • Eat certain foods while disliking the food of their culture, but this one can be rather vague, applying to almost any culture (ex.: liking Sweet and Sour Chicken and Green Tea and disliking Friend Chicken and Grape Soda) {Blogger's note: Yes, this is a scenario I found myself in a few times.}
  • Only listens to Asian music, specifically Japanese or Anime music, as opposed to their culture's.
  • Apparently flock many posters, figurines, even furniture of different anime/mecha/moe media. Even as far as having manga, computer software and DVD/VHS/Blu-Ray of anime.
  • Who likes anime in the original language and subtitled, as opposed to the American Dubbing.
The list goes on, but anything on this list taken to the extreme is considered an unhealthy obsession, and to my understanding warrants the branding term "Weeaboo". Unhealthy obsession is one thing, but the term is still wrong in its usage, rather, why does one's obsession with the Japanese culture have to become the problem of others? Answer: it doesn't have to be, they just want to find something to nitpick about. To me, those who go day in and out finding these stereotypes, and brandishing the term to whoever is unlucky enough to do these things, they are just nitpicking on those who have a strong passion about the Japanese Culture, not necessarily the Pop Culture/Anime scene in particular. Hate on me all you like, those that do this, but here's my verdict, and forgive me if I come off condescending about it:

"OTAKU is not a negative thing, rather you make it that way by your assumptions. Unless it's in a Webster-Merriam dictionary, or properly defined in a book and not that half-ass for brains Urban Dictionary, WEEABOO or WAPANESE is nonexistent to me. If you must find the time to make miserable people who have a strong love for a different culture, then you must be a big flesh of nothing, wasting your life away picking on those with undying respect for Japan. Before calling anyone Weeaboos, take time to look in a mirror and discover who you are as a person, and give these individuals a break. They don't rain on your parade, so on what ground do you think you're in the right to ruin theirs? To answer that for you... NONE. So grow up, shut up, and deal with your own life."

Again, my apologies if this came off as a little heartless, but some things need to be said, though unlike this past one, not as a means of an insult and/or threat. I'll conclude this by saying:

"This has been another Seiko's Thoughts moment. Seiko Wolf, signing off."

Some posts back, I saw before the masses Captain America: The First Avenger, now my wish was fulfilled, when days ago, I watched The Avengers, the Marvel flick comic fanboys were dying for. And boy, was it a hell of a film!! Heading to Silver Spring with my friends was sorth it, despite returning late.

When Loki decides to raise hell, he does so in a big way. Getting his hands on a certain artifact, he wages war on Earth, with little effort at that. But there's one thing you should never, ever do, and that's to rile up a man of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury to be exact, because it made him desperate enough to assemble a band of heroes to raise Hell. Divided, they are greats on their own, but together, they aren't a team to take lightly. From thawed out legends, to destructive faces, The Avengers will save Earth, or Avenge it!

Starring the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, and Scarlett Johansson, it brings together some of Marvel's most familiar and famous faces. The only thing I can say is that you stick around for the whole film to see what Marvel will do next, but if you want destruction, lasers and pipebombs, this movie does not disappoint. Pending on who favors it, we were lucky to see it in IMAX 3D, and it was interesting, despite the gaudy design of the glasses themselves.

Make tomorrow, May 4th, the date people, for this Marvel film is worth seeing. Perfect, 10 of 10, any best rating I say just isn't enough to describe how awesome The Avengers is. I encourage you to see this film!!

'Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace': The Reviews Were In!

It's different things for every meeting, and my mom want us to go and support her. Actually I know, and my mom did say out she just want us to be there, we doesn't need to do anythings, just we being there is enough to support her. And,I decline her,I actually can do that, just to be there once a week, but I decline her in the end, just because of what,I don't want to say. I say out my weakness,my lack of confidence. My biggest weakness for making me doesn't success so far. I knew it,it's just a very bad excuse for not going, my biggest reason of not going is just that I don't want to. I guess my mom knew about it all the way so far,she is my mom afterall, but. . .give me some time, all the things you say just now, I will do it for you,no matter what job I'm doing. It's really so bad why man and woman thinking are so different. Guys doesn't say out that we care about you, but girls need guys to action just to prove it that we care about you.
